Pain Management Tips That Maximize your Energy

What’s more physically and emotionally draining than being in pain? Not much. Pain caused by illnesses and injuries can be exhausting. The body…and the mind…use a lot of energy to heal. Being in chronic pain can lead to depression, weight loss or gain, and cause mobility issues. Managing pain can help you revive your energy and heal.
When illness or injury strikes the body reacts by shutting down primary functions in order to heal. It’s normal to sleep, relax, stay sedentary and do what needs to be done to regain health. Though you’re technically resting, being ill or injured and in pain counteracts the rest you’ve been getting.
Getting pain under control helps with healing, physically and emotionally. Here are some great tips for pain management.
Stay on top of the pain

Don’t wait for your pain levels to become unbearable before taking action. Illnesses and injuries may require pain medication. Be sure to take the medication as directed. It’s much easier to maintain pain relief than it is to get it back under control. If your pain is intense, keep taking pain medication as prescribed until the pain subsides.
Get rehabilitation as soon as possible

Injuries often require rehab. Muscles atrophy and things can get stiff. Getting into rehabilitative therapy helps get your body functioning the right way. This helps rejuvenate your energy and build your stamina.
Get rid of inflammation

Inflammation is a chief cause of pain. Your illness or injury may produce swelling. Do what you can to manage it. Cold therapies can help reduce swelling. Eating certain foods and using certain spices have anti-inflammatory properties too. Reduction of swelling helps manage pain and create energy.
Try massage and other therapies

Massage, acupuncture, and alternative treatments can provide incredible healing benefits to illnesses and injuries. Treating the musculoskeletal, facia, and other elements of the body can help increase healing time and help you generate more energy.
Talk to someone

Depression is often a by-product of illness and injury. Chronic illnesses, especially diseases that alter life, and intense injuries, can cause psychological trauma. Pain can be magnified when depression sets in and it’s hard to get the energy back. Talking to a trusted mentor, friend, coach, or mental health professional can help overcome the psychological setbacks that accompany a painful illness or injury. Getting pain under control and managed can help you revive your energy as you heal and that helps you get back into life. It’s a slow process bouncing back from an illness or injury, but managing pain helps make the process easier.

You are absolutely right! Why suffer from your pain even if it is a minor thing. I injured my ankle many years ago, and it still gives me trouble. Whenever it flares up, I go to PT to make sure I stay on top of it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dr. Dominique, great tips on pain management. I just started cold thearpy, it’s not my favorite due to the discomfort of the chill, but I would rather that over the discomfort of pain. Cold thereapy is also the best technique I have found to releive inflamation more naturally without medication. Last year I had one massage therapy session a month, I have increased this year to one session a week and that has also worked wonders for relieving whole body pain. Thank you for sharing.
