An easy habit to incorporate every time you eat a meal or snack is proper portion control. Controlling portions is one of many ways to track and measure your consumption without feeling like too much extra work. The easier the task is and the more positive results you gain, the more likely you are to adopt it and use it.

It teaches your body how to consume the right amount of food for what it needs to function properly and without mindlessly overindulging. It also highlights your understanding of what foods are important and healthy for your body, as mindfulness is key to proper portion control.

Here are some more top tricks to follow to nail portion control and make adopting a healthy lifestyle and diet easier:

Look for Naturally Colorful Foods

The more colors you can fit on your plate, the more vitamins and minerals you’re getting into your body. The more you answer your body’s nutritional needs, the more likely you will feel satisfied from the meal. Likewise, the more colorful food is, the more nutritious it is.

Don’t Eat Until Stuffed

Getting accustomed to eating just until the hunger is gone is a great habit to be in. You don’t want to force yourself to eat so much your tummy is distended and uncomfortable. To eat this way requires mindfully considering how each bite of food makes you feel before eating the next bite.

Measure and Weigh Your Foods

Don’t trust yourself at first to choose the right sizes based on how it looks. Weighing and measuring your food when you first start, to avoid either under or overeating is a great way to get started on the right track. Under eating is a number one cause of binge eating, so just eat enough if you want to avoid that.

Prepare Smaller Meals

The best way to control your portions is to cook your own food and only make exactly the serving sizes you need to feel full. If you keep a lot of food prepped in the fridge and ready for tossing and cooking, it’ll make it a lot easier for you to stick to. If you need practice with serving sizes, try ordering a meal kit for a short time to help awaken your mind to the sizes of servings.

Be sure to use these tips every time you enjoy a meal in order to reap the benefits proper portion control provides. Learning good portion control gives you tools and understanding to make the right choices without feeling overly restricted. The key to portion control isn’t to avoid food but to learn how every food makes you think and limit it when needed to live healthily.

Excellent tips! The aspect of colorful also pretty much garantees that it looks nice and appetizing! Except if one of the colors is green – according to my teenager 🤪
No kidding about portion sizes. As consumers we have to be careful when we read labels. “A serving ” may very well only be 100 calories. Sadly, a serving is only a tablespoon, too! 🤪

My husband falls prey to the portion issue all the time. Portions are whatever he can eat LOL We are doing better with that now!

Great tips! I’m all for portion control and smaller meals due to health reasons. I find I feel so much better eating slower and less at a meal but having snacks in between.
