June 23rd is National Hydration Day. Hydration is always important but with this summer being so hot, it’s a good time to run a reminder post.
You may not beat the heat, but you can overcome its effects on your body. When the temperatures soar, you need to prepare yourself and remain hydrated. It’s your best insurance policy against sunstroke and heat exhaustion. Protect yourself with the following tips when you’re trying to give your body what it needs the most when the thermometer hits mercury-breaking levels.
Avoid Getting Thirsty
It’s important to hold thirst at bay when the heat settles in. If you become thirsty, it means you don’t have enough water in your body. Water, the elixir of life, maintains your body’s internal temperature, combatting the external temperature. It keeps your circulation going at optimal levels, and it flushes your system of toxins while supplying nutrients at the same time. Don’t ignore your body’s needs. Give yourself plenty of fluids as you prepare for your day, keep a water bottle with you and take sips throughout the day, and remember to refill.
To Be Active, Have a Plan
If you like to be physically active regardless of the temperature, you need to gear up. You should drink water before you get started on that next workout, keep drinking while you’re getting down to business, and hydrate some more when you’re done. The more active you are, the more water you will need and you’ll find yourself sucking it down with no problem. Give your body as much as you want, increasing your intake when your fitness regimen is high intensity for a longer duration.
Supplement with Sports Drinks
If you really put your body to the test with extreme fitness activity, include sports drinks that are loaded with electrolytes, as well as a range of six to eight percent of carbohydrates. This is essential for maintaining healthy blood sodium levels. It will also change things up and give you more variety when you want more than water.
Alcohol is Not Your Friend
Whether you’re planning on getting active or you are simply going to be out in the heat for an extended period of time, alcohol is not a wise choice to remain hydrated. Alcohol actually causes your body fluid levels to decrease. While that beer or wine cooler may sound really good when the sun is blazing overhead, choose a healthy source of fluids.
Pick Your Pleasure
When you want more than water to tempt your taste buds, other drinks can get the job done. Tea and coffee can help you maintain healthy fluid levels in your body. Milk, juice, and soup can keep you hydrated as well. The main goal is to keep the fluids coming when the heat is on.
Load Up on Produce
Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet when it’s hot. They’ll supply you with potassium and more water. You will also be getting a healthy choice for snacks and meals while staying on top of hydration.
