October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. All month, we are celebrating people with Down Syndrome. My daughter has Down Syndrome, so I am going to share a few tidbits about her.

  • My daughter likes to dance. She is back to cheering with the cheer team at Apex Cheer. The team is specifically for people with special needs. She is just getting back into the swing of things so I am interested to see how this goes.
  • She is taking dance at high school this year. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before!
  • She loves her big brother and has picked up a lot of his habits.
  • She participates in programs at GiGi’s Playhouse, the Down Syndrome Achievement Center.
  • She likes to walk our next-door neighbor’s dog. She hadn’t been able to do that often, but the neighbor and my daughter are getting back into a schedule.
  • We started taking her to Challenger Sports. It’s a cool program with people with a variety of physical and intellectual challenges who get to play football, basketball, or cheer. The best part is that players and cheerleaders from high schools and colleges in the area come to play with them.
  • We would love for her to attend a specialized college program after she gets out of high school. We are slowly working towards that goal. Hopefully, she can attend the program at Texas A&M in a few years.
  • She isn’t sure of what she wants to do in the future, but she thinks it will have something to do with food. Unless she ends up working for her brother one day.
  • When we do adopt other kids, she wants to be a big sister.

Our daughter is such a joy even though she is a teenager — just kidding about the teenager part (kind of). We are looking forward to seeing what she does in the future.
