Today, July 19th is National Ice Cream Day. It’s celebrated on the third Sunday in July. July is also National Ice Cream Month. Unlike many foods that I post about, ice cream is one thing that I loved as a kid and still love now. I remember both grandmothers making ice cream — typically vanilla — in those old fashioned ice cream makers. First, they would make…

When the topic of Mexican food comes up, there may be a vast array of flavors and ingredients discussed. But mention Mexican beverages and all discussion turns to one drink – tequila. Mexico and tequila are inseparable, both culturally and legally. A bottle of Champagne can only be labeled “Champagne” if it originates from the Champagne region of France. Similarly, tequila can only be labeled “Tequila” if it is produced in specific Mexican states. This process starts with…

Pink Grapefruit Martini
National Grapefruit month! I remember eating grapefruit halves covered with sugar as a child. It was a great breakfast! Pink grapefruit juice was also a breakfast staple for me as well. I think I ate grapefruit until I was in medical school. Unfortunately, I started taking medications that the fruit would interfere with. It’s been years and I still miss the tart and slightly sweet taste of grapefruit juice. So while I can’t actually enjoy this particular drink, I have it on good authority that this grapefruit martini is amazing! Try it and let me know — I will live vicariously through you! Pink Grapefruit Martini This light and refreshing…
