3 Gourmet Grilled Cheese Combinations

Earlier this month, I posted about 5 different ways to make sourdough grilled cheese sandwiches. Today is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. So, we are going to look at some more variations of the time-old classic sandwich.

BTW, I am taking this month seriously. At our house we are having grilled cheese more than ever. AND my daughter is a huge fan!

The classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring lots of melted cheddar (or American) on soft white bread is the quintessential comfort food. When paired with a bowl of warm tomato soup, this popular combination evokes warm memories of childhood for many.

However, if you find your tastes in cheese and bread have expanded a bit since those early days, you might want to check out these fabulous gourmet versions, as well.

Each combination below yields 2 sandwiches

Gourmet Grilled Cheese – Version 1

8 oz. Brie, rind removed
3 oz. thinly sliced prosciutto rolled and cut into thin strips
1 cup arugula, washed and dried
4 T. fig jam
4 slices sourdough bread
2 T. melted butter, unsalted

Directions:

Brush one side of each slice of bread with the melted butter. Place 2 slices in a non-stick skillet and adjust heat to medium. Add one-half of the Brie, prosciutto, and arugula to each slice, making sure the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Spread the fig jam on the other 2 slices (on the un-buttered side) and place on top of the assembled sandwiches in the pan, buttered side up. Press down on each sandwich with a spatula to ensure even contact and to help the interior ingredients heat evenly.

Carefully flip each sandwich and brown on the remaining side. Again, use a spatula to press down to ensure even contact with the hot surface of the pan.

Once the bread is evenly browned on both sides, remove it from heat and cut it in half. Serve warm.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese – Version 2

2 ripe peaches, pitted and thinly sliced
6 oz. Muenster cheese
1/3 cup pecans, finely chopped
2 T. honey
4 slices white bread
2 T. butter, unsalted

Directions: same as above, but substituting these ingredients.

Gourmet Grilled Cheese – Version 3

6 oz. smoked Gouda, sliced
1 ripe pear, washed, cored, and cut into thin slices (with skin)
1 cup arugula, washed and dried
2 T. jalapeno jelly or jam
4 slices of ciabatta bread
2 T. butter, unsalted

Directions: same as above, but substituting these ingredients.

Hawaiian Ham & Pineapple Grilled Cheese Recipe

Everyone loves a good grilled cheese sandwich but it can get boring after a while. For a new take on grilled cheese sandwich, why not make yourself a Hawaiian inspired one with some juicy pineapples, delectable ham and red onions? This is a pumped up version which you can serve for dinner and that your whole family will fall on love with.

What You Will Need:

  • Half a baguette cut lengthwise
  • 2/3 to 1 cup of your favorite cheese (in this recipe we use mozzarella and mild cheddar mix)
  • 4 ounces of ham, chopped into strips
  • One medium sized red onion, cut into rings
  • Half a cup of pineapple chunks

Time to Create a Mean Grilled Cheese Sandwich!

  1. Gather all your ingredients. It is best to have everything prepared at the start for faster cooking time later.
  2. Fry the ham in its own fat. Set aside but reserve the fat in the pan for the onions and pineapples.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high, pan-grill the pineapples and onions until they develop some color or caramelizes a bit.
  4. On your bread, add half of the cheese, spreading them out.
  5. Place the ham and onions over the bread and cheese.
  6. Add in the pineapples and the remaining cheese and place in a baking tray and put under your broiler until the cheese has fully melted. You may also use a toaster oven on high for 5 minutes.
  7. Here are the lovely halves of your sandwich! If you like, you can serve it this way as an open-faced sandwich, but it’s double the goodness when you slap them together to create a grilled cheese sandwich overload.
  8. One serving is half of the done sandwich.
  9. Or enjoy it as mini sandwiches by cutting it into 4. You may add in some mustard or barbecue sauce but it’s really not needed ad the juicy pineapple and the ham make for a perfect combination together with the onion and creamy cheese!

If you make any of these sandwiches for National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, let me know in the comments!
