June is National Iced Tea Month.

Being from the South, I love, love, love iced tea. So, this is a month that I fully embrace! LOL

But I do love hot tea as well. I guess tea is my jam. For this month, I am going to look at tea — green, black, or herbal), and health. There will be some other tea-based items this month as well. Sit back and grab a cup of tea, and enjoy…

Many Types of Tea

A quick internet search reveals that there are over 3,000 types of teas in the world. These thousands of varieties fall into one of five basic categories: White, Green, Oolong, Black, PU-ERH. These are a spectrum of teas that range from un-oxidized (light and refreshing) white through to oxidized (dark and intense) PU-ERH.

Most people don’t think of these categories though. They likely think of tea as falling into one of these categories:

  • Hot
  • Iced
  • Herbal
  • Black
  • Infusions

A Little Bit of History

Narrowing down the history of tea is complicated. Many regions claim to be the originators of tea. Asia has a strong claim to early tea consumption, but England has a strong claim to the production of tea and helping expand the use of tea into India. No matter the origins and credit for the discovery, it is safe to say that tea has been consumed for thousands of years. In modern times, any type of tea can be enjoyed in any region.

Tea is similar to beverages like coffee and wine. The tea leaves are impacted by their region and the climate the year they were grown. In essence, no two seasons are alike. The nuances from year-to-year and from grower to grower are like that of great winemakers.

What Types of Tea Drinks Are Available?

Tea has always been popular, but in recent times, infusions of teas are becoming more popular. Tea used to be served in restaurants and home settings, but more than ever is widely available in coffee houses and retail markets. No matter your education level or pallet, there is likely a tea that is perfect for your needs or preference.

Here are some types of tea or tea drinks that you can find in today’s market:

  • Boba Teas
  • Fruit-infused tea
  • Tea lattes
  • Sweetened and unsweetened varieties
  • TeaJava
  • And more!

The key to a great tea experience and exploring the vast variety of teas is curiosity. Being curious about what is available where you are – whether you are traveling, eating in a new restaurant, exploring a tea house, or the tea aisle of your grocer. Ask people what their favorite tea drinks are and be willing to try new types. Use a social media resource like YouTube or Pinterest to discover new teas and preparations. Soon you will be an expert in tea varieties and concepts.

Conclusion

Experiencing and enjoying tea is a fun pastime and a beautiful way to express yourself. Whether tea is a staple preference over coffee or one of the many beverages you enjoy, experiment with its many varieties and open up a world of possibility.

Wow! Healing with tea is exactly what I am doing in my mindful tea membership. I love that you are talking about tea today. Gotta admit, though, that I had no idea that there were 3000!! I love hot tea and sweet/iced tea, both.

Me too! I love iced tea but I have started to cut down on the sweetness a bit, I love hot tea and I love herbal tea. I wish I had the time to find all the different types!

I will be posting more about tea this month since it’s National Iced Tea Month!

3000 varieties, WOW!! I love tea, both hot and iced but no sugar. I cut out sugars in 2018 and went cold turkey on McD large sweet tea daily when I realized I was drinking mainly a large cup of sugar! I love plain brewed tea and had raspberries to it. I was also given some Armenian Mountian Tea, right from Armenia and that was so delicious! Thanks for all the great tea info!

I have tried all the teas on this list except for ice tea, I would love to know how it’s made and give it a try. Herbal tea is my favorite because it has a lot of benefits.

    Hi Dominique,
I do love tea, but I had no idea there were so many different kinds. I only knew about hot/iced tea and green/black, that was about the extent of my tea knowlege. Looking forward to learning more about teas and their health benefits. Thank you for sharing the new knowlege.

Sending lots of love and gratitude,
    Jaime

I’d always prefer coffee over tea but I wouldn’t say no to cold lemon iced tea and green tea from time to time. I didn’t realize that there are more kinds of tea beyond black tea and green tea.
