On Day 8 of the 30 Thankful Days Challenge, we’ll be sharing our gratitude for creature comforts.

Imagine life without heat to warm our homes in the frigid cold of winter.

Imagine suffering through 90-degree summer days without an A/C unit to keep us comfortable and ensure a good night’s sleep.

What if your home didn’t have electricity or an internet connection? How far would you have to travel to get plugged in and connected to the rest of the world?

Too often we take for granted the basics that enhance our lives in ways that seem small but are actually quite significant.

To think, in some parts of the world, a hot shower or warm bath just isn’t an easy option when you’re sick, or tired and achy after a hard day’s work.

To think, in some places, a flushing toilet and sewer pipes that carry away our bodily waste, is something that only the privileged get to have.

What would your day be like if you didn’t have a car to drive to the store?

What if there were no stores?

Day 8 JOURNAL EXERCISE: Show Gratitude for Creature Comforts

Few will probably do this. But just for a day, try going with the very bare minimum of comforts and conveniences if you can. Write down your experience.

If the weather is chilly where you are, try lowering the heat down to 56 degrees in your home for a day. (This temperature is just cold enough to be impactful, but it won’t freeze your pipes which could lead to unnecessary complications in your life.)

Instead of waking up to take a hot shower, try a cold one this morning.

If you can travel someplace without using your car to get there, do it. Write down what happened. The walk might be a fun adventure, sure. But how much of your time was taken up because you didn’t have a vehicle to get you someplace that you needed to be?

Today, give thanks for those comforts and amenities that make up such a large part of our daily lives.
